U.S. News & World Report has ranked Mount Sinai School of Medicine 18 out of 146 medical schools and schools of osteopathic medicine nationwide, maintaining its position in the top 20 best medical schools in the United States. Mount Sinai stands alone at number 18, improving in nearly every ranking indicator, including a significant increase in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.

Geriatrics is now listed as the number-one program in the nation, up from second last year. Mount Sinai's geriatrics service also tops the list in that category within U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals in the United States listing.

The new rankings, released in the 2012 edition of the US News & World Report "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue, are based on statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. This information is obtained through surveys of program directors as well as academics and professionals. Criteria used in the rankings include peer assessment surveys, research activity, grade point averages, MCAT scores, and NIH funding. Mount Sinai's ranking in NIH funding also continues to improve as it is currently ranked well within the top 20 medical schools in receipt of such funding.
