Weight Management

We designed our weight management services to address the rising incidence of obesity—a condition that can lead to more serious conditions—in children, teens and young adults. Our goal is to provide young people with the right tools and nutritional information that will allow them to take an active role in managing their health—for today and in the future.

Each young person receives service designed specifically for their own individual needs that includes a complete physical exam and health evaluation; meeting with a registered dietician; goal setting; ongoing health care, nutritional education and supportive counseling.

Teen Fit

Teen Fit encourages young people to stay active and healthy with a number of exercise, workout and dance fitness classes. Classes take place in the Center’s gym and include training sessions that focus on improving strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity. Teen Fit also can customize workout plans for young people who are trying to overcome weight problems. As a component of this program, we combine nutritional education and counseling that supports the physical and emotional health and well-being of participants.

Teen Fit meets once a week at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center and two days per week at the 92nd Street Y.

Teen Fit Classes

  • Monday – Boxing and More! with Ken Watts
    Get in shape! This is a high-intensity workout using calisthenics and boxing combined with exercises to increase metabolism, flexibility and sculpt the body.
  • Wednesday – Spinning
    This class is for everybody. On a spinning bike, this class will develop your cardiovascular strength and endurance like no other workout. Your instructor will lead you through different styles of rides with motivational music and class instruction.
  • Friday – ZUMBA® with Xavier Marzan
    A fusion of Latin and International music - dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. Zumba utilizes the principles of fitness interval training and resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.

Eating Disorders

We provide medical, nutritional and mental health assessment and treatment for those adolescents with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, female athlete triad, binge eating disorder and other types of disordered eating patterns. Our team includes physicians who are adolescent medicine specialists, a registered dietitian, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.

Each young person is provided:

  • A comprehensive medical evaluation (including physical exam and laboratory tests)
  • Ongoing medical care by a adolescent medicine specialist
  • A nutritional assessment and meal planning
  • Individual and group dietary counseling and nutrition education offered by a registered dietitian
  • An evaluation of emotional well being and mental health and ongoing help
