Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at Mount Sinai South Nassau can be satisfying and enriching. You don’t need to have any experience to volunteer. All you need is a little spare time, a smile, and a kind heart. Whether you can give just a few hours each month or many hours a week, you can make a difference in someone’s life.

You can join as an adult volunteer or as part of our Junior Volunteer Program. Either way, you can work with patients or assist with clerical and courier duties in a clinical or administrative area. We sometimes have special opportunities to volunteer. These can include hospital eldercare, which offers companionship and a chance to interact with seniors; and animal-assisted therapy, which helps hospitalized patients recuperate faster by easing fear, anxiety, and loneliness.

Our volunteers tell us how rewarding they find their work. No matter what role you choose, you’ll become an important part of our team—for patients, family members, visitors, staff, physicians—and each other. In addition to personal rewards, we honor our volunteers with pins denoting the hours they've worked.

Adult Volunteers

Mount Sinai South Nassau is looking for adults aged 18 and over to volunteer. You might work in areas such as nursing, the emergency department, oncology, or physical therapy. You can help in non-clinical ways. Some volunteers serve as greeters to escort patients and family members throughout the hospital. Others support the nursing units by delivering newspapers and magazines. You could also run errands throughout the hospital.

Additionally, we need volunteers in administrative offices. This includes human resources, our business offices, medical records, admitting, medical staffing, nursing education, employee health services, wound care, community education, and satellite locations throughout the organization. These volunteers provide clerical services.

Other volunteers offer their time and compassion to various patient care units or to the pet or music therapy programs.

Volunteer spots at Mount Sinai South Nassau are limited. Please contact info@snch.org for more information.

Junior Volunteers

Mount Sinai South Nassau welcomes high school-aged young adults ages 15-17 to volunteer with us. You can work after school or during spring and summer breaks. This is a great way to help others—and to get a firsthand look at the health care field. It might inspire you to work in health care. To join our Junior Volunteers, or for more information, please contact info@snch.org.

Some of our junior volunteers receive college scholarships. Each year, Mount Sinai South Nassau recognizes local high school graduating seniors with the Dorothy M. Sharer Health Care Scholarship, given to outstanding junior volunteers at the hospital who plan to pursue a career in health care. The scholarships range between $250 and $1,000.

Volunteer Benefits

We show our appreciation to our volunteers in a variety of ways. For adult volunteers, we have:

  • Annual award luncheon: Each spring, hospital administrators and members of the Board of Directors hold a luncheon to salute our volunteers for their tireless support and service
  • Meal vouchers: Our volunteers receive a $6.00 voucher for the cafeteria every day they spend with us.
  • Special events: We include volunteers at hospital special events, including our annual Golf Outing and annual Soiree Under the Stars Gala.

In addition, many of our volunteers make new friends. You can also explore new interests. And you can experience the satisfaction of helping others.
