Patient and Community Education
At Mount Sinai South Nassau, we strive to be a strong, positive force throughout the South Shore of Long Island. For this reason, we go into the community to provide a range of patient education and screening services. All our community services are free of charge.
Community Education
Our goal is to prevent disease, support wellness, and empower self-care. To do this, we offer education and outreach through the Vaxmobile, our mobile community health bus. Our health education offerings address a range of topics, including:
- Aging in place to protect independence and health
- Colorectal cancer and prevention
- Concerns about falls (ages 65+)
- Diabetes and diabetes self-management
- Heart health
- Injury prevention
- Smoking cessation
- Stop the Bleed Program (learn to stop life-threatening bleeding)
Prevention and Screenings
We feel it is best to prevent a problem, or discover it when it is at its earliest, most treatable phase. To this end, we have a mobile unit, called a Vaxmobile, which brings COVID-19 vaccines to several convenient locations in the area. In addition, we provide a wide range of health care screenings and testing. These address a variety of conditions, including:
- Anxiety and depression
- Balance testing
- Body mass index
- Cancer: breast, colorectal, head and neck, prostate (PSA blood draw only), and skin
- Diabetes risk assessment and Hg A1C blood test
- Flu
- Heart health: blood pressure, cholesterol (lipid panel), hypertension
- Memory
- Podiatry exams (limited)
- Stroke risk
- Vaccines
We also offer a variety of educational opportunities. These classes, programs and support groups are held regularly at the hospital and at numerous centrally located community sites. Call 516-377-5333 to register for a class.
CPR Training
Do you know what to do if the heart of someone you love has stopped beating? Our CPR training can prepare you to help anyone, anywhere, at any time. We offer infant CPR classes as well.
Diabetes Education
A diabetes diagnosis affects your life every single day. You have to watch what you eat and how much you exercise. You must monitor your blood sugar and take medicine accordingly. It can be overwhelming, but our Diabetes Education Program offers education and support groups to help.
Prenatal Care Program
Everyone wants to give their baby the best possible start in life. Prenatal care can be key. Our Prenatal Care Program combines medical, nutritional, educational, and social support to help you have a healthy baby.
Childbirth Education
We offer several classes addressing the birthing experience, breastfeeding, and infant care. Our e-classes are available 24/7 in English and in Spanish. Each session includes videos and activities.
Smoking Cessation Program
It’s never too late to quit smoking. Our program is designed to educate, motivate, and support you in your efforts to stop smoking. The in-person meetings take place in the Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Conference Center. For more information and to register, please call Maria Meek at 516-497-7492.
