Five things to know about heart disease in women

Icilma Fergus, MD, discusses women’s heart health and the importance of early detection of heart disease. She said, “Never overlook your numbers—those numbers are your blood pressure, your blood sugar, and your cholesterol numbers. Your blood pressure should be between 110-130 over 70-80, you should have a fasting blood sugar of less than 100, and you should know your good cholesterol—that’s the only one you want to have high—above 50; and the LDL, the bad cholesterol, should be less than 100. Never assume you’re too young to have heart disease. In fact, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, can have heart disease—it does get more serious as you get older but never think you’re too young.”
