Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital System delivered a baby last week in a hospital department that some ob/gyns may not be accustomed to -- the cardiac intensive care unit. They were concerned that for Leslie Echeverria, 24, who had complex congenital heart disease due to rubella exposure in utero, delivery could be too severe a strain on her heart. "All of us put our heads together and we decided we were going to deliver in the CICU," said Ali Zaidi, MD, system director of The Mount Sinai Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center. According to Lauren Ferrara, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, delivery in the cardiac intensive care unit wasn't easy. "But that wasn't even a question. Having all the tools necessary for the cardiac surgeons was important."
