In thyroid disorders, last year's theme was to "do less," said Terry F. Davies, MD, co-director of the thyroid center at Mount Sinai Union Square and professor of medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and bone disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "This is the most obvious where the treatment of early and small thyroid cancers are concerned. Watchful waiting has been used in Japan for many years rather than rushing to have the thyroid removed and then dosing with radioiodine. Now we are beginning to practice in the same way. Furthermore, our use of radioactive iodine has been markedly reduced in many thyroid cancer patients where the tumor is confined and not causing problems as assessed at surgery," said Dr. Davies.
