October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raises awareness of the second leading cause of cancer death in women, according to the American Cancer Society. Although progress has been made, in the United States, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and approximately 230,000 women will develop the disease in 2017, according to experts at the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai experts offered tips for breast cancer prevention, indicating that clinicians should advise patients to limit alcohol intake and quit smoking, control weight gain, be physically active and know their genes and family history. Mount Sinai experts also indicated that clinicians should limit the dose and duration of hormone therapy.
