Mount Sinai Medical Center CEO Comments on the Supreme Court's Ruling on the Affordable Care Act
Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mount Sinai Medical Center, comments on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act.
The following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act can be attributed to Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
"We welcome the Supreme Court's historic decision and the impact it will have on patients in New York City and across the country. The Affordable Care Act leads the way to much needed reform of the health care system—opening doors to meaningful health care coverage for 34 million Americans, including many of the patients we serve at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Today's decision is a positive step forward in reforming the health care system, and while we know there are issues that remain to be worked out, having this clarity will ensure that patients can get the care they need.
At The Mount Sinai Medical Center we believe we have a moral obligation to drive health care reform at our hospital and medical school. We are committed to improving health care efficiency and support reforms that improve coordinated and integrated patient care, the patient-centered medical home, bundled payments and Accountable Care Organizations. In fact, we've already taken many steps to realize the vision of the Affordable Care Act, including the development of new models to drive coordinated patient care, a new Department of Family Medicine and Community Health to bring high-quality preventive and primary care to the surrounding community, a new geriatric emergency care program projected to improve Medicare patient outcomes and produce significant cost savings over the next three years, and an innovative program that has cut hospital readmissions by 46 percent in a targeted population. Our fully functioning electronic medical record (EMR) helps clinicians provide care across a continuum, improving the quality of care and insuring that an entire healthcare team is aware of the patient's condition and status.
As a leading academic medical center on the border between the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the East Harlem community, we provide care for one of the most diverse populations in the world. We have pioneered programs that help low-income patients who suffer high rates of chronic conditions including diabetes and heart disease. We welcome the provisions of the law that advance our commitment to delivering new patient-centered models of care that will result in better patient outcomes, better use of resources and greater cost effectiveness."
