A lot of doctors-in-training are encountering such challenges as medical schools overhaul their curricula to put the patients, not the science, first. Rather than have students just sit in lecture halls for the first two years, many schools match them with patients on Day one. “Seeing illness from the patient's perspective is the goal,” said Dr. Valerie Parkas, associate dean of admissions at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and head of a program that pairs first-year enrollees with chronically ill patients.
