There have been intense investigations and results over the past ten years of finding gene regions for Type 2 diabetes, but the big problem is that these genes have not been in the coding region that makes the actual protein. Andrea Dunaif, MD, chief of the division of endocrinology, diabetes, and bone disease for Mount Sinai Health System said, "The big challenge has been trying to figure out what these variance that have been mapped do to cause Type 2 diabetes, and we need to do that so we can use that information to develop better predictions and drug targets." Dr. Dunaif explains the approaches being taken to understand the gene regions and what they do, greatly advancing the field.
