Advances in genomics, bioinformatics and molecular biology, as well as digital-imaging technology, computer modeling and the ability to store enormous amounts of data cheaply, have opened a window on the workings of the brain. But with its staggering complexity, the brain largely remains a mystery. “Our understanding of something as simple and straightforward as, say, looking at a tree is not even clear,” said Dr. Eric Nestler, director of the Friedman Brain Institute and chairman of neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
