NY Daily News-Dr. Sanghyun A. Kim on Colon Cancer: New Surgical Advances Against a Leading Form of Cancer

 – February 17, 2011 /Press Release/  ––

Americans have a high rate of colon cancer, and the aging population is especially affected. "We consider people over age 50 at risk," says Dr. Sanghyun Kim, a colorectal surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at Mount Sinai. "That risk dramatically increases when the patient has other colon ailments like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease." Genetics and lifestyle are both contributing factors to colon cancer. "Racial background doesn’t make a huge difference, but people with more than three relatives with colon cancer are in a higher risk category," says Kim, "Sedentary lifestyle, a history of constipation, and eating a poor diet with high fat content and low fiber can all contribute to your risk."
