Spinal Cord Injury Unit

Director: Thomas N. Bryce, MD

Mount Sinai’s Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) unit comprises the only SCI service in NYC accredited by CARF. The Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center is especially well prepared to work with patients who may have complex medical needs. Four beds in the SCI unit are dedicated for the rehabilitation of individuals who are ventilator-dependent.

Patients with SCI often present with a variety of physical and emotional needs—and we are superbly equipped to address those needs. Services and qualities unique to the SCI unit include:

  • An expert team of physiatrists with specialty training in the management of SCI
  • Dedicated rehabilitation professionals with expertise in all aspects of medical and rehabilitative care of patients with all types of SCI
  • A structured rehabilitation program for patients with concomitant spinal cord and brain injury
  • An SCI peer mentoring program
  • Functional electrical stimulation, ergometry, body-weight supported treadmill training and robotic technology
  • Male Reproductive Rehabilitation Program

CARF-accredited outpatient services and specialized programs are also available after hospital discharge.
