Studies show genes, environment play a role in children’s ability to handle trauma

Dennis Charney, MD, explains that a child’s ability to deal with trauma is influenced by more than their genetics. He said, “Genes are not destiny. Trauma can affect the development of key brain systems that regulate anxiety and fear. Psychotherapy and psychiatric medication can sometimes help people who’ve experienced severe trauma and hardship. A loving family, a strong network of friends, and positive experiences in school can help counterbalance the ill effects.”
