As New York passes the peak of the virus, the city’s hospitals now face the challenge of balancing COVID patients with their regular patient needs. Mount Sinai in Manhattan closed a temporary ward in its soaring atrium, while at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, empty beds have been moved into hallways. Hospitals are also turning to the issue of mental health and addressing the needs of front line health workers who have experienced enormous stress. Mount Sinai this month announced an initiative to study stress in medical workers and offer them access to support groups and mental health treatment.
