Jazz Jennings is just 16, but she’s been vocal about her gender identity and transition for years through social media and her show, I Am Jazz. Now, Jazz is revealing that she’s ready to move forward with gender confirmation surgery. John Steever, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said “it’s uncommon for someone as young as Jazz to have a vaginoplasty. Certain states have laws that can prohibit a person from having the surgery before 18 or 21, and patients might require a waiver if they want to have it before the minimum required age.” It’s not an easy process: people who undergo gender-affirming treatments and procedures must first undergo a thorough multidisciplinary evaluation to be medically diagnosed as having gender dysphoria.
