A dedicated Spine Hospital officially opens Monday at the Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side after a soft launch several months ago. The system invested $80 million to create a co-located area where surgeons, pain doctors, physical therapists and a host of other spinal-injury specialists could coordinate patient care. In addition to a 36-bed inpatient unit, the facility features a 16-bed neurointensive care section and a research lab affiliated with Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine. "When you combine expertise on the surgical side, the recovery side and the outpatient side, the outcome is bigger than the sum of its parts," said Andrew Hecht, MD, chief of spine surgery for Mount Sinai Health System and The Mount Sinai Hospital.
