"The Dreams of Denisse"
A profile on Denisse Rojas's journey to medical school.
Like many college students, Denisse Rojas found she had to work 30 hours or more a week to keep up with her financial responsibilities. But the workload did not keep the determined student from graduating from UC Berkeley with a double major in Interactive Biology and Sociology. Despite her academic and extracurricular credentials, Rojas could not surmount her undocumented status. “It was challenging,” conceded Rojas, who said she applied to universities across the country, from Washington to New York, and everywhere in between. “Not a lot of schools accepted undocumented students.” But one of the schools that sent a different letter was the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). “Our goal is to increase access to medical education for the most diverse group possible,” said David Muller, MD, ISMMS Dean for Medical Education, in a statement. “Denisse Rojas and others who have benefited from DACA came to this country for a better, safer and freer life. It is our privilege to welcome [these] exceptional students and provide support for their continued innovation and excellence.” Learn more.
