"In primary care fields, increasing the number of doctors is an enormous challenge," said David Muller, MD, Dean for Medical Education, Professor and Chair of Medical Education, and Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "I think the big driver is finances. The fact that medical students come out of medical school with an increasing amount of debt, plus the inability to make compensation that would easily allow them to pay off that debt, steers a lot of people away from primary care fields."
