Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett Presents Grand Rounds on September 12th
Mary Travis Bassett, MD, MPH, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, will present the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s September Grand Rounds. She will speak about place based solutions to neighborhood health disparities.
Dr. Bassett was appointed as New York City Health Commissioner in January of 2014. As Deputy Commissioner from 2002-2014, she directed key initiatives, including bans on smoking and trans fats in restaurants and the requirement at chain restaurants to post calorie counts. She also established the department’s District Public Health Offices (DPHOs) in East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx and North and Central Brooklyn to lead targeted health and communication strategies in these communities that experience an excess burden of disease. Each office advances community health through home visiting programs, free exercise programs, efforts to increase access to healthy food, meetings with area doctors and coordination with local coalitions. Dr. Bassett is also an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Public Health.
As part of the Mount Sinai Health System’s virtual campus, videoconferencing will be offered with the Beth Israel Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine and the Mount Sinai-affiliated Mid Hudson Family Practice Residency in Kingston.
The event will be held from 8-9am on Friday, September 12th in Mount Sinai’s Goldwurm Auditorium (1425 Madison Avenue at 98th street), 1st Floor. A light breakfast will be served at 7:45am.
Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Grand Rounds are supported with a generous donation from the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation. They are open to all and occur on the second Friday of every month throughout the academic year.
