Peter Pastuszko, MD, Appointed Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and Director of Pediatric Cardiovascular Services at Mount Sinai Health System
Peter Pastuszko, MD, a renowned pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, has been named Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and Director of Pediatric Cardiovascular Services at Mount Sinai Health System. He will co-lead the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery with Khanh Nguyen, MD, Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Pastuszko will perform surgeries on newborns and infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Dr. Pastuszko will play an integral role in the pediatric alliance formed by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS), which is designed to give children in the New York metropolitan area access to an unprecedented scope of pediatric services. The initial phase of this collaboration began last fall with the development of a collaborative pediatric oncology program that provides access to the newest treatments and expertise from MSHS and CHOP experts in pediatric cancer. Development of programs in cardiac care and fetal medicine launched this spring. Services will be available at select Mount Sinai locations.
Dr. Pastuszko has extensive expertise in thoracic and vascular surgery, fetal medicine, aneurysm, cardiopulmonary bypass, and deep vein thrombosis. He is board certified in congenital cardiac surgery and thoracic and cardiac surgery. In addition to his clinical efforts, Dr. Pastuszko conducts research on surgical methodologies.

Dr. Pastuszko joins Mount Sinai from Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was the Surgical Director of Cardiac Critical Care at the Ward Family Heart Center, Site Director of the University of Kansas Cardiothoracic Residency Program, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Prior to that, he was Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Critical Care and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of California-San Diego. Earlier, he served as Assistant Professor within the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.
Dr. Pastuszko received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, he belongs to the American Medical Association, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, and the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society. He has produced more than two dozen research publications as well as abstracts, presentations, and book chapters.
