About Steven S. Elbaum
The Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving at Mount Sinai honors the remarkable life of Steven S. Elbaum, whose deep compassion for others, devotion to family, and acts of generosity exemplified the very heart of caregiving.
Steven was born in Germany in 1948 to Holocaust survivors, Sala and Izak Elbaum, in a displaced persons camp after World War II. At the age of one, he immigrated to the United States with his parents, settling in Brooklyn, New York, and embarking on a journey that would embody the essence of the American Dream. Steven earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School and quickly ascended the ranks at his law firm, becoming a partner in only four years. He then went on to serve as the Chairman and CEO of The Alpine Group for thirty years, mentoring many colleagues along the way. Steven also co-founded the Elbaum Family Clubhouse through the Madison Square Boys and Girls Clubs, which provides critical resources for youth in Brownsville, Brooklyn—his childhood neighborhood.
Steven passed away on January 12, 2025, at the age of 76, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of love, wisdom, and compassion that is carried on through his beloved family members, including his wife of 45 years Judy and his children Sally and Lawrence. His commitment to helping others was the source of inspiration for the Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving at Mount Sinai, which was established through a transformational gift from Steven’s sister, Trudy Elbaum Gottesman, and her husband, Robert Gottesman. Steven’s empathy, responsibility to others, and an unwavering dedication to family and community have laid the foundation for the Elbaum Center’s work and guide its mission to recognize and support caregivers across the country every day.
