The Mount Sinai Department of Radiology offers an array of advanced imaging services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography scanning (CT), ultrasound, digital mammography and positron emission tomography (PET) that help physicians to quickly and accurately make diagnoses in every disease area, allowing for early detection and treatment. Our nationally renowned interventional radiologists use minimally invasive therapies to treat a broad spectrum of conditions such as stroke, blood clots and many types of cancers using image-guided techniques.

Early Detection a Priority
We are committed to special screening approaches for early disease detection. We provide radiological screenings for atherosclerosis as well as colon, breast, and lung cancers. Our early detection programs use a variety of imaging techniques, such as CT and MRI for atherosclerosis, CT for colon cancer, PET for oncology, and digital mammography, MRI, ultrasound, and computer-aided diagnosis for breast cancer.
Minimally Invasive Procedures Common
Radiology at Mount Sinai has moved beyond diagnosis to the most sophisticated therapeutic interventions. Interventional radiologists at Mount Sinai perform:
- Vascular therapies
- Uterine artery embolization for fibroids — an alternative to hysterectomy
- Treatments for aneurysms, atherosclerosis, and many types of cancer
In addition, advanced CT and MR angiography techniques are widely used to diagnose vascular diseases in a minimally invasive yet highly accurate manner.

Radiologists work closely with surgeons, oncologists, and other caregivers to optimize the diagnosis and treatment of patients with head and neck, liver, lung, breast and gastrointestinal cancers. Additionally, we have a dedicated Lung Screening Program which provides unparalleled diagnostics and treatment for all lung diseases, including early through late stage lung cancer.
Research Efforts Yield New Diagnostic Tools
The Department of Radiology is an active center of imaging research and development. Mount Sinai scientists and physicians developed a special form of MRI to diagnose heart disease and atherosclerosis noninvasively, thereby identifying patients at greatest risk for heart attack and stroke. This technique, the black-blood MRI, causes blood to appear dark while vessel walls appear bright, allowing cardiologists to identify thickening of the artery wall, an indication of otherwise undetectable plaques.
The Department of Radiology collaborates with other disciplines to develop and refine imaging tools that will make prevention and diagnosis effective. For example:
- Neuroscience, in which imaging innovations affect our understanding of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors and various psychiatric disorders
- Cardiovascular disease, in which studies to predict the risk associated with atherosclerotic plaques and to assess new therapies for aortic and cerebral artery aneurysms are underway
- Liver disease, in which radiologists, transplant surgeons, and hepatologists collaborate to develop optimal therapeutic strategies
