Psychiatry

Our Services

Depending on your needs or the needs of your loved one, we can offer neuropsychiatric care on an inpatient basis during a stay at the hospital or on an outpatient basis.

Outpatient Geriatric Psychiatry

Outpatient care takes place at the Martha Stewart Center for Living in New York City. A multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals provides outpatient care that includes comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments, and review and prescription of medicines (psychopharmacology).

We also offer individual and group therapy as well as support groups for patients and their families who act as caregivers.

You may want to ask about participating in one of the research protocols that are available through our carefully

Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry

Mount Sinai has a dedicated inpatient unit with 21 beds where we provide 24-hour care for older patients with serious neuropsychiatric illness. Our specialized team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and rehabilitation therapists provides intensive neuropsychiatric and medical evaluations. Based on our evaluation, we personalize each patient’s treatment plan.

Inpatient care often involves the use of therapeutic medications (psychopharmacotherapy). We provide patients with both individual and group psychotherapy that may include art therapy, drama therapy, and music therapy. When it is time for patients to return home, we help with detailed after-care planning.

Treatments We Offer

Combining the newest science with a wealth of clinical experience, Mount Sinai’s Division of Geriatric Psychiatry provides treatments in an environment that respects each patient’s dignity and desire for independence. Mount Sinai offers treatment on both an outpatient and inpatient basis. Making use of multidisciplinary methods, we use medications and psychotherapy as appropriate.

We provide the following diagnostic and therapeutic methods:

  • Psychopharmacology
  • Educational workshops
  • Group psychotherapy (in English and Spanish)
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Neuropsychological testing
  • Support for caregivers

In addition, with the resources of the Mount Sinai Health system, geriatric psychiatry patients have direct and convenient access to a full range of medical specialists for treatment of other existing medical conditions.

Research

Patients also can benefit from ongoing clinical research activities through the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. We offer clinical research opportunities to patients with mood and psychotic disorders as well as memory disorders. By participating for these studies, patients may have access to new therapies while helping researchers refine current therapies for a range of neuropsychiatric illnesses.

The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry is also closely allied with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, which is nationally renowned for its dedication to the study of aging and the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
