Geriatric Psychiatry Service Areas
The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry offers the following inpatient and outpatient services.
Outpatient Geriatric Psychiatry
The Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic (located in the Martha Stewart Center for Living) is home to a multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals who provide care that includes comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments, psychopharmacology, individual and group therapy, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and support groups. Some of our patients may also be eligible for research protocols available through the Division’s research initiatives. Because family members often need support as well, we offer caregiver support groups.
Our outpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic is supported by Mount Sinai’s other specialized psychiatric service areas, which include:
- Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice, Psychiatry
- Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program
- Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center
Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry
The 21-bed Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit (located on 7 South of the Klingenstein Clinical Center) provides care for older patients suffering from serious neuropsychiatric illness that requires intensive evaluation and treatment. Our specialized team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and rehabilitation therapists is skilled in providing comprehensive neuropsychiatric and medical evaluations, and developing the most effective treatment plan for each patient. The inpatient care we provide includes psychopharmacotherapy, individual and group psychotherapy (including art therapy, drama therapy, and music therapy), Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and after-care planning.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Service
Our Service provides both inpatient and outpatient Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). A multidisciplinary team consisting of ECT psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, and psychiatric nurses collaborates to provide state-of-the-art care for patients with severe mood and psychotic disorders. Participation in an NIMH-funded, multi-site research project investigating maintenance ECT in geriatric depression is available to eligible patients. Referrals for ECT evaluation are offered on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.
