Advancing Health Equity Through Education

The Office for Health Data, Outcomes, and Engagement Strategy team provides education for faculty, staff, and trainees through our online Advancing Health Equity Together Academy (AHETA) platform on PEAK and through classroom-based in-person and virtual sessions. Customized sessions are available upon request from various departments.

Advancing Health Equity Together Academy (Online Courses) 

The Advancing Health Equity Together Academy (AHETA) is our online learning platform, accessible through PEAK, where faculty, staff, and trainees may complete educational modules on health equity-related topics.  

Our goals for AHETA are to: 

  • Expand awareness of behaviors and practices that perpetuate all forms of inequity inthe work and learning environment.
  • Equip participants with tools, strategies, and resources to mitigate all forms of inequity.
  • Inspire ongoing learning in content areas related to contemporary social issues andadvance health equity.

Once logged into PEAK, individuals can access AHETA modules by navigating to: Training Catalog > Online Courses > Functional > Advancing Health Equity Together Academy

Customized Education (In-Person and Virtual Courses) 

We provide faculty, staff, and trainees education—both in-person and virtual—on the following topics: 

  • Why Health Equity Matters
    Identifies and reviews core health equity concepts and builds organizational capacity to advance equitable health care outcomes for the communities we serve. 
  • Cultural Awareness: Enhancing the Patient Experience
    Defines equity, health equity, and cultural awareness and uses case studies to emphasize tools and resources essential to enhancing the patient experience. 

Best Practices in Human-Centered Care

  • Understanding What Shapes Our Perceptions and Decisions: Explains how perceptions can impact critical health care decisions and provides strategies for practicing more conscious awareness.
  • Caring for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Gender Diverse (LGB/TGD) Patients: Reviews policies, best practices, and resources to provide competent and sensitive care to LGB/TGD persons and communities.
  • Caring for People with Disabilities: Covers key concepts, terminology, the impact of perceptions, best practices, and resources to provide competent and sensitive care to people with disabilities.
  • Collecting Patient Demographics: Provides an understanding of common terminology and best practices for collecting patient demographic information.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)/ Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Credit Offerings Credit Offerings 

We offer CME/CEU opportunities on the following:

  • LGBT Patient-Centered Care Education
    Faculty, staff, and trainees can access free online courses and webinars in LGBT patient-centered care to meet educational requirements for renewing Mount Sinai’s Leadership Status on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s LGBT Health Equality Index (HEI). 

These sessions, provided by the National LGBT Health Education Center, are developed by experts and offer free CME/CEU credits.
