What an Health Information Exchange (HIE) is at Mount Sinai
- A mechanism to exchange pertinent clinical data following IHE standards and protocols between Mount Sinai hospitals, owned community physicians and voluntary partners not using Epic.
 - A provider portal that has a longitudinal patient record, inbox, consent management and Direct messaging capabilities required to support patient safety initiatives, meaningful use, effective care management and all State and Federal HIE requirements.
 - A foundation for physician outreach, marketing strategies and competition for grants/contracts due to aggregated patient data record, ability for order entry and results inbox, data standardization and normalization, and robust interface engine to act as a single interface to external clients.
