Labor and Birth at The Mount Sinai Hospital
At The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Center for Labor and Birth, we provide exceptional care. Our 15,000-square-foot facility is on the second floor of the Klingenstein Pavilion within The Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder Center for Maternity Care. We have an advanced command center and central hub for monitoring and assistance. These upgrades enhance both patient care and hospital efficiency.
The center features 16 spacious birthing rooms. Each birthing room has a nurse call system, electronic fetal-monitoring machines, comfortable recliners for birthing partners, and a flat-screen TV. Advanced technology such as wireless fetal monitoring and nitrous oxide is available if you need it. For security, your baby will wear ID bands that match yours and your support person’s. Your baby will also have an ankle bracelet that will alert us if your baby leaves the postpartum unit. Our care includes a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit and four private antepartum fetal surveillance rooms, ensuring comprehensive care for both you and your baby.
We also have peanut balls—especially if you’ve had an epidural, using these peanut-shaped exercise balls has been known to speed labor. The center offers lovely views of Central Park. This combines our modern amenities with a soothing environment to make your birthing experience as pleasant and memorable as possible. We want you to feel comfortable and supported every step of the way.
Labor and Birth at Mount Sinai West
At Mount Sinai West, we tailor your birth experience to you — safely, compassionately, and with the expertise you expect from Mount Sinai. From preconception planning through your baby’s first days at home, our obstetricians and midwives partner with you and your support person to understand your preferences, create a clear birth plan, and adjust as your needs evolve; when needed, Maternal–Fetal Medicine specialists are part of your care. When you arrive in labor, we begin with a thorough assessment and transition you to our 12th-floor Labor and Delivery unit—equipped with the latest technology and designed for comfort—with board-certified physicians on the unit around the clock. After delivery, you recover in a private postpartum room on the 11th or 12th floor, with lactation support and coordinated newborn care, and have access to our on-site neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) if specialized care is needed.

Midwifery Services
At Mount Sinai, our midwifery team offers personal care during pregnancy and childbirth. Our midwives join your prenatal visits, attend vaginal births, and help with postpartum care after your baby is born. Our midwives strive to empower you to make informed decisions about your own health care.
Many people think midwives only care for people who want “natural childbirth.” But our midwives can also help induce labor if needed. Midwives can also help you choose a pain-management plan, such as an epidural or nitrous oxide.
Our midwives help ease the transition into parenthood. Midwives are not surgeons or specialists in high-risk obstetrics. But all midwives at Mount Sinai work with our obstetricians and gynecologists, should you need advanced care.
Midwives provide:
-
Prenatal care through routine appointments and monitoring
-
Care during labor and birth
-
Education on lactation, nutrition, reproductive health, and family planning
-
Health screenings for cervical cancer, vaginal infections, and sexually transmitted infections
-
Contraception, including prescriptions for contraceptives and long-acting reversible contraception placement
-
Postpartum care
We also offer midwifery services in downtown Manhattan at Mount Sinai Doctors-108 Delancey Street. Our midwifery practice provides a range of services for both pregnant and non-pregnant woman.
