Spinal Cord Injury Peer Mentoring Program

The Spinal Cord Injury Peer Mentoring Program creates partnerships between persons with recent SCI (“partners”) and people who have successfully coped with SCI over the long term (“mentors”). These partnerships, which begin during inpatient rehabilitation, last between eight months to one year after the person has been discharged into the community.

Since program initiation, more than 100 persons with SCI have completed mentor training and 130 partners have been matched with them. An evaluation of the impact of the program has shown that the vast majority of partners and mentors benefit from the program, partners primarily via increased knowledge of SCI and enhanced ability to cope with the challenges of SCI in daily life. The program is coordinated by Jim Cesario, MA.
