Electrically Induced Lower Extremity Ergometry Program

For more than 20 years, the outpatient Electrically Induced Lower Extremity Ergometry Program has been the only one of its kind in New York City. This program offers individuals with spinal cord damage an opportunity to exercise their paralyzed arms or legs using surface-applied electrical stimulation, resulting in muscle contractions.

When this stimulation is sequenced properly and controlled by a computer, it enables people to use an upper- or lower-extremity bicycle through the active contractions of their muscles. The benefits of this treatment differ for each patient, but include

  • Preventing or retarding muscle atrophy
  • Increasing circulation to stimulated areas
  • Improving range of motion
  • Relaxing spastic muscles
  • Increasing bone density
  • Improving cardiovascular status
  • Improving perceived well-being
