Pediatric Liver Diseases

The goal of the liver team at Mount Sinai is to give children and adolescents with acute and chronic liver disease the promise of full and meaningful life by delivering state of the art care. A critical part of our effort is a close partnership with patients and families that ensures best outcomes and personalizes efforts to patient and family needs. To do so, we have a team which includes pediatric liver specialists, surgeons, transplant specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and child life specialists and close partnerships with the Heart Institute, and specialists from the kidney, infectious diseases, pulmonary, and cancer teams.  

The Liver Team is an integral part of the Recanati-Miller Transplantation Institute (RMTI), one of the foremost solid organ transplant programs in the country. The RMTI provides additional expertise not only with transplant surgeons and hepatologists but also through collaborations with renowned experts in imaging and interventional radiology.  The close collaboration between pediatric and adult liver specialists distinguishes the care at Mount Sinai.  As part of the Mount Sinai Health System, the liver team is committed to gaining new knowledge through research. The team plays a critical role in multi-center clinical studies to improve outcomes for liver transplant recipients and for children with chronic hepatitis and for those with biliary tract disease.

There are several different conditions that affect liver function. Acute and chronic liver conditions can damage liver function and cause symptoms. Typically, the liver takes a considerable amount of damage before any symptoms are noticeable.
