The Department on Nursing Education at both The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens provides professional development and educational support for all nursing staff as well as other clinical departments/personnel in the hospital.

All nurses in MSH and MSQ attend a comprehensive two-week centralized orientation. We follow this with a comprehensive unit-based orientation in which nurses new to the organization work with a preceptor. Nurse Educators are assigned to all services, and as part of their role, they coordinate all orientation and staff development initiatives in conjunction with preceptors and nursing leadership.

All new graduate nurses participate in a year-long nurse residency program which supports the transition to practice. In addition, we offer several nurse fellowship programs in specialty units.

Continuing education/staff development programs are on-going to support the professional growth and development of our staff.

Professional Practice Model

The Nursing Professional Practice Model is “Relationship Centered Care” which serves as a framework for nurses across all specialties and service lines. This professional practice model supports nurses to practice, collaborate, communicate and develop professionally including:

• Care of Team

Viewing the patient as paramount is an essential tenet of the professional practice model. Relationship Centered Care is framed on a therapeutic nurse patient relationship. Professional relationships support inter-professional care coordination, communication and collaborative practice. Concepts from this framework flow into the practice environment as nurses at all levels and specialties demonstrate collaborative partnerships with patients founded on therapeutic communication and unconditional positive regard for the person.
