The Mount Sinai Department of Volunteer Services is celebrating 60 years of a long and rich tradition of providing support to the institution and the surrounding community. With a wide range of placement—from inpatient and ambulatory areas to offices and laboratories— our dedicated volunteers play a vital part in the Mount Sinai mission of excellence in patient care, education and research

Patient Areas

Inpatient care volunteers visit hospitalized patients. We offer excellent opportunities for those interested in a career in medicine or nursing and for those wanting to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Ambulatory patient care volunteers assist patients and staff in ambulatory settings. These are excellent volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping lessen the stress of illness and those wanting to learn about the hospital environment.

Office Support

Office support volunteers are placed throughout the medical center in administrative offices and ambulatory care areas such as the Derald H. Ruttenberg Treatment Center and The Martha Stewart Center for Living. Office support volunteer opportunities are designed to familiarize individuals with the structure and work flow of a complex medical center. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in helping out in a busy office environment and maintaining office skills.

Research

Basic Science volunteers assist the laboratory staff with carrying out research techniques. Clinical Research volunteers assist the research staff with data entry and collection, and compiling study documents. Both are exceptional year-round opportunities for students interested in a career in medicine. Additionally we offer a competitive basic science Premed Research Opportunities Program in June and July.
