About Me

Dr. David Portnoy is a Hospitalist for the Division of Hospital Medicine. His primary interests within medicine are in medical education and clinical programs. In the realm of medical education he serves as Co-Director of the Hospital Medicine Elective, where students can learn one-on-one from Hospitalist Faculty. He also serves as Associate Course Director of In Focus, a series of lectures and small group sessions to help medical students develop into competent physicians. His work in clinical program development is primarily in the area of sepsis, where he serves as both Co-Chair of Mount Sinai’s Sepsis Committee and the physician lead of Mount Sinai Hospital’s Sepsis Transitions of Clinical Care Program. These roles help facilitate reductions in mortality and hospital readmissions related to sepsis. Dr. Portnoy has been recognized for exceptional patient care and integrity – he has been the recipient of the STAR award on three occasions as nominated by his colleagues in nursing and social work. He has additionally conducted multi-disciplinary nephrology and pathology research into lupus, for which he was named an American College of Physicians Young Achiever. The ACP has further recognized him as a Fellow in light of his contributions to the field of internal medicine.
