The Maurice and Barbara Prostate Health and Research Center provides a patient-tailored approach to the treatment of prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland).
Treatments may include a trial of broad-spectrum antibiotics, frequently with good results. When this treatment is not successful, alternative treatments must be considered.
Although an infection of the prostate gland can sometimes be the cause, irritation and inflammation of the prostate can occur without an infection being present. When prostatitis occurs without a detectable infection, possible causes include: irritants from urine, immunological phenomena, neurological and muscular overactivity, and physical trauma.
It is also well recognized that prostatitis symptoms are exacerbated during periods of emotional and physical stress. Therefore, treatment modalities such as anti-inflammatory agents, nutritional supplements, exercise, stress reduction, biofeedback and other advanced pain management strategies can be utilized accordingly. Therapy is then tailored to the individual patient’s problem and adjusted to obtain the most satisfying results.
Patients with coexisting benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis will be provided coordinated treatment, with all available modalities including medications and minimally invasive laser and microwave therapies.
