Pediatric Critical Care
The Alice Gottesman Bayer Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Kravis Children’s Hospital opened in December 2012. Our 14-bed unit averages 700 admissions per year. We care for pediatric patients from infants to 21 years of age. Our unit is also equipped with a treatment room designed for providing a space for procedures and procedural sedation.
Our expert medical staff includes 5 pediatric intensivists who work closely with pediatric subspecialty consulting services as well as pediatric and cardiothoracic surgeons. Staff also includes 36 full-time nurses who specialize in critical care, pediatric pharmacists, two social workers, nutritionists, respiratory therapists, child life specialists, and rehabilitation specialists.
We provide inter-hospital transport services for critically ill infants and children with a specialized team which may consist of a physician, PICU nurse, and respiratory therapist depending on the clinical needs of the patient. We provide approximately 70 critical care transports per year for patients requiring a higher level of care or for patients in need of subspecialty evaluation including pediatric bronchoscopy, liver, renal, or small bowel transplantation, and inherited metabolic disease. To arrange for a critical care inter-hospital transport, call 212-241-6500 and ask to page the pediatric chief resident on call. The chief resident will assist you with arranging the transport and identifying an accepting physician.
Our interdisciplinary team is trained and equipped to provide renal replacement therapies like dialysis and continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH), therapeutic hypothermia, and advanced ventilation modes including nitric oxide therapy and high frequency oscillatory ventilation. In conjunction with the pediatric cardiac/cardiothoracic intensive care unit, we offer extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist device (VAD) support for the treatment of severe cardiac failure.
This unit is key to the care of renal, liver, small bowel and cardiac transplant patients. Staff also participates in a pediatric palliative care and pain team that provides a consultation service for patients cared for at the Kravis Children’s Hospital.
