Obstetrics and Prenatal Care

When you’re pregnant, you want the best possible care for a successful pregnancy and delivery of your baby. We provide full pregnancy care, from conception through delivery and the postpartum period.  At Mount Sinai Doctors-234 East 85th Street, OBGYN, we provide care for low- and high-risk pregnancies.

Prenatal Care

Proper medical care while you are pregnant is crucial to your baby’s healthy development.  It should begin as soon as possible with frequent visits throughout the pregnancy. A prenatal visit involves checking the baby’s heart rate and the mother’s blood pressure, urine, and weight gain. Obstetricians usually perform ultrasounds to visually check on the baby’s development. By developing a partnership with your doctor over nine months, you can work together for a successful delivery. Women who receive prenatal care have healthier babies and are less likely to deliver prematurely or have pregnancy-related problems.

We are comfortable treating many medical conditions during pregnancy, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease)
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • History of premature birth or recurrent miscarriages
  • Thyroid disorders

State-of-the-art ultrasound imaging: Obstetrical ultrasound is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic procedures and has been safely used for years in fetal monitoring. It is painless and uses sound waves to create images, with no needles or ionizing radiation. We use it several times throughout pregnancy to monitor the growth and development of the fetus and detect any potential birth defects or other issues. You and your doctor can view the image in real time on a computer monitor. We perform this procedure across the skin of the lower abdomen (transabdominally) or within the vagina (transvaginally). The results of an ultrasound are visible immediately on a computer screen for the doctor and patient to view together. More detailed results are usually available within a day or two.

Lactation consulting: Many new mothers find breastfeeding to be challenging. A lactation consultation can help you fully understand the breastfeeding process and troubleshoot any problems, pain, or confusion. Even mothers who have successfully breastfed one baby may need help with a new baby.
