What is a Breast Ultrasound?

An ultrasound of the breast is done to evaluate any problems that may have been found during a screening or diagnostic mammogram or in a physical examination. They may also be performed as an adjunct to a screening mammogram.

How is a Breast Ultrasound Performed?

A technician holds an instrument to your skin, which transmits sound waves through the breast. Echoes from the sounds waves are then picked up and transformed by a computer into a black and white image that is displayed on a screen. This examination is painless and does not expose the patient to any radiation.
