This skin condition is the most common type of psoriasis, and it causes raised, red patches covered with silvery scales. If plaque psoriasis covers less than ten percent of your body, it's considered mild. In these cases, topical treatments tend to be the best bet, said Gary Goldenberg, MD, assistant professor of dermatology and pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and director of the dermatology faculty practice at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Steroids are among the most widely prescribed topical treatment for plaque psoriasis. They work by reducing the inflammation that fuels the condition. There are several non-biologic medications that can help treat plaque psoriasis. One, Otezla, is extremely effective for moderate plaque psoriasis, Dr. Goldenberg said. It's a pill - in injection necessary - that inhibits an enzyme linked to inflammation.
