"Why Do We Still Not Know Who Needs a Mammogram?"

A recent draft recommendation statement for breast cancer screeningthere from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has sparked a major debate among expert ogranizations.  Many feel that the draft, which does not recommend for routine screening for average-risk women aged 40 to 49 or for yearly mammograms for women between 50 and 70 years, is too lenient.

Dr. Laurie Margolies, Director of breast imaging at the Dubin Breast Center, as well as the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology disagree with the USPSTF.  Dr Margolies believes that the task force has done a disservice to women and states, “Just as we all wear seatbelts to prevent a few from getting injured, we must screen all women so that no one dies unnecessarily from breast cancer. That is a cost that society should bear”.  Learn more
