The American Cancer Society issued new breast cancer screening guidelines that increased the recommended age for women to begin mammogram screening. “We want to keep one goal in mind and that is to keep people alive and eliminate lives lost from breast cancer,” said Laurie Margolies, MD, director of breast imaging at the Dubin Breast Center of The Mount Sinai Hospital. “Until we really know what the risk factors are and can tell an individual what their risk really is, we have to try to find all the breast cancers we can.” Dr. Margolies added that although the new guidelines do not endorse physical breast exams for women, it remains an important part of preventing deaths from breast cancer. “We see that routinely, that somebody in their 20s or 30s will come in and say ‘I felt a lump.’ We do find breast cancers that way,” she said.  Learn more
