Today in our country, as many as 650,000 opioid prescriptions were dispensed, and sadly, as many as 175 Americans died from a drug overdose. In McDowell County, West Virginia, one person dies every ten hours from a drug overdose. Yasmin Hurd, PhD, professor of psychiatry, neuroscience, pharmacology, and system therapeutics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and director of the Center for Additive Disorders for the Mount Sinai Health System studies how drugs affect the brain. “Heroin abuse is a whole brain disorder; there are specific circuits that are more impaired, but it’s a whole brain disorders,” says Dr. Hurd. “The opioid treatments interact with opioid receptors so the person doesn’t crave and need the heroin or other addictive drugs.” An estimated 40 percent of those on medication assisted therapies will still relapse, but the rate of relapse in programs without drug therapies reaches as high as 90 percent.
