April is National Donate Life Month and every year Mount Sinai hosts an informational session in the atrium to educate the medical staff and public about organ donation. The initiative is a joint venture undertaken by the Mount Sinai Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute and the New York Organ Donor Network. Several transplant recipients generously donated their time to educate the public about the importance of organ donation and transplantation.

New York trails most of the rest of the nation in the number of people who have signed up to be organ, eye and tissue donors via the state registry. The New York Organ Donor Network has initiated a campaign to add 1 million more donors to the New York Donate Life registry by 2012. Mount Sinai joined this effort by signing up 90 new organ donors during the weeklong educational initiative.

A quilt crafted by families of donors was on display in the Mount Sinai atrium.
