Speech and Language Pathology

When your speech and language skills are affected because of disability, illness, or injury, Mount Sinai’s speech and language pathologists are available to offer support and state-of-the-art services. Our speech and language pathologists evaluate and treat patients with a wide variety of communication and cognitive disorders, including speech, language, articulation, voice, and swallowing difficulties. We offer a wide range of assessment options to properly determine what speech or swallowing issues you may have including the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) test.

Our team of experts works closely with you, your family and your physician to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses even the most complex communication and swallowing deficits.

Treatments

Mount Sinai’s speech and language pathology team understands that treatment is unique to your particular needs. We offer a variety of treatment options at Mount Sinai to treat speech or swallowing disorders including:

  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC): Includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, and ideas. People use AAC when writing, making facial expressions or gestures, or using symbols or pictures.
  • Communication/cognitive groups: An excellent way to improve social skills and build confidence is to work with other individuals who are rehabilitating similar injuries or disorders that are affecting their ability to speak
  • Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT): Therapy for speech disorders associated with Parkinson's disease focuses on increasing volume and is delivered by a speech therapist in 16 one-hour sessions spread over four weeks
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation with VitalStim (NMES): Sensory stimulation that is provided also helps strengthen muscles and improve swallowing function

Outpatient Services

Our experienced and dedicated speech language pathologists evaluate and treat individuals who have difficulty with communication, cognition, swallowing, and voice. Mount Sinai’s speech and language pathologists will work with you to reach milestones by using the newest methods in a supportive and caring environment. Some of these outpatient treatment options include:

  • Building general communication skills (speaking and understanding language)
  • Developing voice and speech clarity
  • Improving memory, reasoning, and other cognitive skills required for daily tasks
  • Restoring proper swallowing function
