Brain Injury and Stroke Unit

Director: Dr. Kirk Lercher, MD

The Brain Injury (BI) unit provides comprehensive rehabilitation to people soon after experiencing a traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke or other type of BI. The unit is an integral part of Mount Sinai’s TBI Model System of care (one of only 16 in the U.S.). The unit is also one of only two CARF-accredited BI services in NYC.

Patients with brain injury often present with a variety of physical and emotional needs—and the Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center is superbly equipped to address those needs. Services and qualities unique to the BI unit include:

  • An expert team of physiatrists with specialty training in the management of BI
  • A team of dedicated rehabilitation professionals with expertise in all aspects of medical and rehabilitative care of patients with BI
  • A structured rehabilitation program for patients with concomitant spinal cord and brain injury
  • A TBI peer mentoring program
  • Evaluation and treatment of vestibular and visual impairments
  • A Stroke Club
  • Opportunities to participate in a wide variety of research studies related to traumatic brain injury, through the Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai

CARF-accredited outpatient services and specialized programs are also available after hospital discharge.
