Treating Mood and Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents

Mood disorders in children and adolescents are a major public health concern. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 14 percent of adolescents, ages 13 to 18 years old, and 3.7 percent of children, ages 8 to 15 years old, suffer from a mood disorder. These conditions in youth are often characterized by depressed or elevated mood, social withdrawal, irritability, and loss of interest along with sleep, concentration, and appetite disturbances. Such disoreders are debilitating and associated with social difficulties, drug abuse, academic failure, and most critically, suicide. Read more
