NYNW-TV –Dutchess County Girl Recovering After Kidney Transplant
A 12-year-old girl with a life-threatening kidney disease and the dream of becoming a doctor gets her wish for a new kidney after she goes on television and a living donor, who is a perfect match, comes forward.
When 12-year-old Gabriella Falzarine appeared on Fox 5 in February 2012 she voiced a request that pulled at the heartstrings of many. She said she wanted someone to donate their kidney to her so that she could grow up and become a doctor. Born with a rare kidney disease, Gabriella, or Elle for short, needed a kidney transplant to survive. For the past three years, her body had endured 10 grueling hours of dialysis a week. After the Fox 5 story aired about 50 people came forward to donate. One was not only a perfect match, but a high school classmate of Elle’s father. Here, captured on video, is the moving story of Elle’s arrival at Mount Sinai Medical Center with her family and her living donor, Marcia Rhodes, for the transplant surgery. Elle is seen walking less than 24 hours later. Learn More
