After Years of Ineffective Treatments, Asthma Patient Finds Relief
"I have had a long history of asthma. I originally came to Mount Sinai after many years of allergy shots, which proved to be ineffective. The allergist I was working with referred me to Dr. Alvin Teirstein, a pulmonologist, because I had become steroid dependent and could not manage a successful withdrawal plan. Dr. Teirstein suggested that I see his colleague, Dr. Gwen Skloot who specialized in asthma. He felt that she might have an idea how to control my acute disease. Well, he was correct. My medications were evaluated and some were changed, and I was no longer steroid dependent.
Dr. Skloot has always taken the time with me that she felt was necessary; I never felt rushed. I always felt her sensitivity to my well-being and genuine continued interest in my health. Every appointment has included an update and conversation about needed testing or a change in medication. Whenever there has been a concern for a second opinion or a referral, Dr. Skloot readily provided me a name of another doctor. Recently I was having a breathing issue due to what she thought could be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and it was because of her referrals to four different doctors that saved my life. Her insistence and support made sure I would follow through with her after each appointment and recently I had surgery to correct the problem.
I have always been treated with respect by her staff and surely Dr. Skloot. Mount Sinai is welcoming, professional and calming all at the same time. Though there have been emergency situations, Dr. Skloot has always fit me into her schedule even before or after hours. Asthma can be an alarming disease, but I have a comfort level knowing I am in the hands of Dr. Skloot."
