Soft Tissue Fillers: Juvaderm, Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra

Soft tissue fillers are injectable substances that are used to replace lost volume in certain areas of the face. Compared to relaxing agents like Botox™ and Dysport™, they treat deeper creases and wrinkles by providing volume to the affected areas. Federal Drug Administration (FDA)-approved fillers are a constantly changing. The fillers we use at Mount Sinai’s Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Program are all FDA approved and include:

  • Juvaderm™ and Restylane™: these are gel like substances made from Hyaluronic Acids, naturally occurring compounds found in our bodies in between the cells
  • Radiesse™: this is a naturally occurring substance made from hydroxyapatite microspheres
  • Sculptra™: the primary component, synthetic polymer made Poly-L-Lactic Acid, has long been used in dissolvable suture material

Each of these products has specific qualities that make it ideal for treating specific areas of the face (i.e. hyaluronic acid is typically used for lip enhancement). They are not permanent with their effects lasting from 6 months to up to 4 years depending on the substance used and the area injected. The injections can be performed during a routine office visit. Local anesthesia is administered via topical creams or injections. Patients may experience some bruising but will see instant results.

Cost is always concern, as insurance does not generally cover surgery or treatment that is done purely for cosmetic reasons. Our team provides patients with expected costs prior to any intervention.
